I think I would encourage the student to begin with the idea of a fable. What constitutes a fable? What are the conventions? Try to derive the focus and the research question from that, I suggest. The outcome may be broader than only focusing on characterisation/setting, but I think that may result in a more interesting and (in the context of an interest in fables) relevant essay.

What does 'reflected through representation' mean? I suggest the student simply focuses on the textual construction of gender. I'm not saying that language should be studied without consideration for social life, but rather that the emphasis for the essay should be on construction through language. I think the student needs to consider whether to discuss only the male, only the female, or both; whatever the student decides it should be motivated in some way.

I'm a bit confused. Why did the student write in a "table" format? And do please forgive my ignorance with this question, but what is a "table" format for an English Extended Essay? I've never seen or heard of this before - at least I don't think I have. If you could please clarify what you mean it would be most helpful.
My guess is that the student will have to take the essay out of the "table" and put it into one complete and coherent piece of writing. The analysis can't occur in a graphic organizer of some sort, if that is what is meant by "table" here. It must be an essay. My guess is that is the way forward, but I am not sure as I need a bit more information.
