While Kaplan currently works in the video game industry, he actually started out as someone who wanted to write fiction for a living. He attended the University of Southern California for Creative Writing, where he landed a writing internship for Universal Pictures. However, Jeff left this position sometime after and then attended graduate school at New York University. Kaplan’s goal was to get his short stories published and find an agent, yet this didn’t pan out as expected in the long run.

Since the mid-1990s, farmers in the Palo Verde valley in Southern California have embraced a new way to supplement their livelihood: temporarily transfering their water rights to urban utilities in exchange for cash. By not farming, farmers free up to 111,000 acre-feet of agricultural water per year for the cities — enough for 220,000 homes. In this illustrated report, the Bill Lane Center for the American West's research assistant Emily Bookstein (Stanford '11) looks at the largest and longest water transfer of its kind in California history. Over three-quarters of applicants to USC receive rejection letters -- the university is one of the more selective schools in the country. In the graph above, the blue and green dots representing accepted students are concentrated in the upper right corner. The majority of students who get accepted to the University of Southern California have "A" averages, SAT scores (RW+M) above 1200, and ACT composite scores above 25. Higher test scores will improve your chances measurably, for over 75% of admitted students have an ACT composite score of 30 or higher and a combined SAT score around 1300. But even if your grades and scores are on target for USC, you have no guarantee of admission. There are a lot of red dots hidden beneath the blue and green on the graph. Also keep in mind that a few students get accepted whose scores are a little below the ideal. These are typically students with a special talent or unique personal circumstances.

USC is one of the greatest schools on the west coast, in the United States, and in the world.
I am about to finish my third year as a Trojan, and I couldn't be happier at the University of Southern California. I came here from New York to study neuroscience, and even when I decided to switch into print and digital journalism, I was able to switch into one of the best programs in the country.
USC is all-around one of the best schools there are. We are ranked Top 10 in almost everything we do, whether that be football, tennis, film or business. Trojans give it their all, and it pays off.
USC is the second-largest private institution in the United States next to Miami, but it never feels like it. Everywhere I go, I see a familiar face, especially as the years go on. I always feel like I'm at home.
I can't say enough about the Trojan family. I have held countless internships during my time at USC because of alumnus who want to help current undergrads. I have no doubt in my mind that I will leave USC and do the same for future Trojans wherever I end up.
The USC campus is beautiful and flat, making it convenient for walking or biking. There are plenty of great places to eat on campus including Lemonade, Panda Express, California Pizza Kitchen and Seeds. There are countless libraries on campus and they're all beautiful and great places to study (except maybe Leavey).
The students at USC are extremely diverse and represent an array of cultures. Although there are the stereotypical rich kids here, they're easy to avoid. Find the quality people and be their friends. You'll learn a lot from the people with perspectives different from your own.
People complain about USC's location in "the ghetto" but I wouldn't change USC one bit. FIGHT ON!
